Superintendent Dr. Chris Clouet congratulated Jamie Weber as she accepted the position as the new principal of both Long Hill School and Elizabeth Shelton for the upcoming 2017-18 school year.
The Board of Education announced that it supports Superintendent Dr. Chris Clouet’s recommendation for the shared assistant principal position of the city’s two largest elementary schools at its meeting last Thursday night.
Just one year after creating the unique position, the city’s superintendent said a board of nine people selected longtime Shelton educator Jamie Weber as the new assistant principal of both Elizabeth Shelton and Long Hill School from a competitive group of “in-house” candidates.
“We feel like we have a lot of talent in the district and we wanted to give our own teachers an opportunity to explore this next phase in their careers. We felt this was a good way to use our homegrown talent,” said Clouet. “She brings a lot of energy and passion to the work. She’ll be able to work well supporting teachers and her students.”
Weber said she’s excited for her new beginning and has been wanting to step up out of her comfort zone to be a part of the “great administrative team” in Shelton.
“I’m so excited to continue the great work that Mrs. Belden and Mrs. D’Aiuto have started,” said Weber. “This opportunity presented itself and it seemed like a great fit. I had been at Elizabeth Shelton a couple of years ago and I knew how the building ran so this seemed like a great stepping stone for me.”
The new shared assistant principal position became available when its previous and first occupant, Andrea D’Aiuto, accepted the position as principal at Long Hill School.
Weber taught kindergarten and first grade for the better part of her last 24 years in Shelton classrooms and currently holds 092 Certification. The Intermediate Administrator (092) Certification Program is designed to equip educators with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to be administrators in Connecticut’s schools in positions ranging from assistant principal up to, and including, assistant superintendent.
‘Homegrown talent’
Over the course of her career, Weber taught at Lafayette, Elizabeth Shelton, Sunnyside, and Mohegan. This past year she served as the Instructional Interventionist at Perry Hill.
She said she is prepared for the challenge, but more importantly is thankful for the opportunity.
“I think I love the challenge because I get two schools full of students that I get to work with and two groups of parents and staff that I get to work with as well,” said Weber. “I’m just so honored and humbled to have gotten this position and I look forward to working with even more kids here in Shelton because kids are the future and my passion.”
Clouet said the board was in search of someone with energy, “a solid background in what good teaching looks like,” and the ability to work with students and their families as needed.
“On top of everything else, Jamie brings a lot of experience in the district, she’s very strong in math, and she was very articulate in her vision for the district,” said Clouet.
The superintendent said all new positions have a probation period, and Mrs. Weber’s contract is a two-year deal with the district.
Weber grew up in Bridgeport, went to high school at St. Joe’s in Trumbull, and went to Fordham University for her undergraduate degree. Currently living in Milford with her husband, Mrs. Weber said when she’s not in the classroom she’s brushing up on her golfing skills. The Weber’s have a daughter that is entering her sophomore year at the University of Tampa.
