On March 30 State Senator Kevin Kelly, State Representative Jason Perillo and State Representative Ben McGorty joined Liberty Bank to honor student essay winners from Perry Hill and St. Joseph Schools in Shelton.
The students participated in an essay contest where they wrote about important women in Connecticut’s history and how their contributions to the state and nation affected them.
“It was great to see so many students participate in this event. They really researched and identified with the subjects they chose and did a wonderful job,” State Senator Kevin Kelly said. “I would also like to thank the teachers and parents who are critical in the educational achievement of our youth.”
Both State Reps Jason Perillo and Ben McGorty were impressed by the entries submitted by the students.
State Representative Jason Perillo said, “It was a real pleasure to meet with and congratulate these students, who put a lot of thought and hard work into their entries. All of the entries were showcases of Shelton’s academic excellence, and I thank Liberty Bank for joining us in sponsoring this contest.”
State Representative Ben McGorty said, “It’s clear that these students have a meaningful understanding of the important contributions made by women in our state’s history, and it is reflected in their interesting and well-written essays. I offer my congratulations to all of the entrants, and the winners for their great work.”
The contest – held during Women’s History Month in March – was open to all 6th grade students in Shelton. The contest rules required students to compose a 300-word original essay.

St. Joseph School: Winner Chloe Garrow, Runner-up Mark MacDaniel
